Chevrolet is set to show off the new Equinox Sport at the North American International Auto Show in January, adding a 3.6-liter 263-hp V6 and a performance exhaust system for a whopping 42-percent power jump over the previous range topping LT version. The German automotive magazine Auto Bild and Continental has recently sponsored an event that aims to determine the most fastest tuned car. The event took place in a race track located at the Italian city of Nardo.
The group of contenders is made up of different auto tuners around the world including Sportec, Brabus, 9ff, TechArt, Hohenester and others. The 9ff’s Porsche 997 Cabrio bags the title of the world’s fastest tuned car when it accelerated with a top speed of 380.5 km/h (236.43 mph), thanks to 9ff’s 780-horsepower engine. Head of 9ff, Jan Fatthauer commented:

Nissan is reportedly considering building an inexpensive sports car based on the Foria concept car shown in 2005. If built, it would essentially be a spiritual successor to the much-missed 200SX, according to Autocar. The rear-wheel-drive car would be positioned below the 350Z, according to the report.
Another possibility inspired by another concept "the Urge concept" is also reportedly under consideration at Nissan: a mid-engined car in the same price range, media reports say. Chrysler Group's Jeep brand division has released the pricing specs and details of the all-new 2007 Jeep Patriot compact SUV. The vehicle comes in two model trims - the Patriot Sport and Patriot Limited models. Both models comes with standard safety components including Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Anti-lock Brakes (ABS) with rough-road detection, Brake Traction Control and Electronic Roll Mitigation.

Honda Motor Company announced that they are recalling a total of 209,898 models of Mobilio and Mobilio Spike passenger wagons in Japan to repair defective electrical systems on some of its components. Honda said the recall is for Mobilio and Mobilio Spike models produced between November 2001 and May 2005.
The company will make the recall because the vehicle’s brake lights and gears could fail due to the defective electric wiring system. Honda and the Japanese Transport Ministry said the defects could cause abrasion on the surface of the electrical terminals and in worst cases, may not turn on the brake lights.

Tesla Motors, one of the manufacturers of electric cars is planning to build a four-seater electric sedan, a follow up model for the Roadster coupe. The new electric sedan is set to compete with the current benchmark in luxury sedan segment, the BMW 5-Series. The Leftlane News, citing a report from U.K.’s AutoExpress reports that BMW is considering offering a rugged crossover version of the forthcoming MINI Clubman five-door wagon. The all-wheel-drive MINI will reportedly likely hit showrooms for the 2010 model year, if production is approved.

Nissan recently introduced the new-generation redesigned Skyline midsize car in Japan with an all-new exterior and interior styling. Nissan said the new Skyline was developed under the concept, "attraction, sophistication and high-performance driving."
The all-new Nissan Skyline now comes with new exterior features including longer nose, new front-grille, headlamps, integrated spoiler, L-shaped tail lamps, and double exhaust pipes. According to a recent blog posted by GM Vice Chairman Bob Lutz, General Motors’ Saturn brand division will launch the all-new Vue crossover vehicle in the upcoming 2006 Greater Los Angeles Auto Show. The new Saturn Vue is based the earlier concept vehicle called the PreVue that was unveiled at the New York Show last April. Bob Lutz also said the collaboration of GM’s Saturn and Opel brands will have a cost-effective strong and broad product lineups. General Motors is reportedly planning to offer a new remote control LCD key fob in April 2007 that will provide information on tire pressure, fuel level, and odometer reading. The system will also allow owners to pre-set the radio station and confirm the doors are locked.
USA Today reports that the device will cost $150 for buyers of various full-size GM SUVs, including the Cadillac Escalade. "One of the overarching themes people told us they wanted was security and safety," GM spokesman Tom Henderson says. The Detroit News reports that Chrysler is offering a novel deal to buyers of its redesigned Chrysler Sebring: the company will give $1,000 in cash to any shopper who trades in a Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, Nissan Altima or Ford Fusion for a 2007 Sebring.
The offer is available through Nov. 30 to customers who are currently leasing the rival sedans, the News said, citing several Chrysler dealers.
Chrysler has also extended its five-year, zero-percent financing offers until the end of the month for 2006 cars and trucks and is increasing rebates as much as $1,000 on most 2006 vehicles.
Chrysler is also offering rebates of up to $4,000 on certain 2007 models, including the Chrysler 300C sedan, the Dodge Magnum wagon, Charger sedan, minivans and the Dodge Ram pickup.

The Detroit News, citing color specialists at PPG Industries Inc., reports that silver is still the most popular color, as it has been for six consecutive years.

XM Satellite Radio this week announced that the first of the all-new Lexus LS series with standard, factory-installed XM Satellite Radio and XM NavTraffic are now available at dealerships.

Honda has recently overtaken Nissan to regain second place among Japan's automakers. The Detroit News reported that the automaker built 1.79 million cars and light trucks worldwide in the first half of the Japanese fiscal year, up 6 percent from year-earlier levels, while Nissan's output fell by 12 percent to 1.52 million vehicles.
Both automakers, however, are far behind Number One Toyota, which produced 3.94 million vehicles in the first six months of the fiscal year, more than Nissan and Honda combined.
Still on Honda, the automaker has also announced that it will increase North American production of its fuel-efficient four-cylinder Civic models in early 2007 by as many as 60,000 units annually.
Honda will reportedly shuffle production of cars and trucks among its North American plants to keep up with demand for the hot-selling Civic.
The company is also set to move production of the Honda Pilot from Canada to Alabama in February. The move will make the Lincoln, Alabama, plant the sole source for the Pilot and the Odyssey minivan. In April, the automaker will add Civic sedan production to its Alliston, Ontario, Plant 2 for the first time. Plant 1 in Alliston already builds the Civic.
Honda has reported that Civic sales rose 7.1 percent through September over 2005.

Nissan has announced the recall of about 132,000 of its vehicles globally — including 80,000 in North America — because of an ignition key defect.
The affected vehicles are X-Trail and Muranos built between August 2004 and July 2006, as well as 10,000 Maximas sold in North America.
According to Nissan, the problem involves some of the ignition parts that are too long, so the cars sometimes don't start properly. Occasionally, the engines start even when the ignition is turned off and the driver moves the steering wheel, the automaker added.
The recalls applies only to models using Nissan's "intelligent keys" with integrated circuit chips inside, which allows drivers to open their car doors with their keys still inside their pockets by just pressing on the handle.

After 21 years of sales and nearly 7 million units sold, Ford will end production of its popular Taurus sedan next week, the Associated Press reports. It’s a sad, slow death for the once best-seller; the original Taurus, though dated by today's standards, was actually quite controversial and futuristic. In 1985 the Taurus made its debut and consequently went on to save Ford from financial turmoil - immediately selling 263,000 units during that first year. That number rose to 410,000 units in 1992 after the Taurus overtook the Honda Accord to become the best selling passenger car in the U.S., a title it held for five straight years.
The demise of the Taurus, credited with moving America away from boxy V-8 powered gas-guzzling bedrooms-on-wheels to aerodynamic, more efficient cars with crisper handling -- began after Ford abandoned development of the car in favor of SUVs in the mid-1990s.
Media reports also say that workers at Ford's plant in Hapeville, GA are particularly upset over the Taurus being discontinued. And who wouldn’t be? Not only will the plant be closed, the workers lose their jobs, but the team’s efforts at becoming a world class workforce (even raising quality levels at the plant after Ford announced it would be closed) also, would have been all for naught.
Earle Chafim, a 22-year electrician who repairs welding robots said workers met company goals, yet Ford still decided to shutter the plant.
"The biggest part I hate is we got the No. 1-selling car in the company, we won so many awards for being No. 1, it's a shame. We're still outselling other cars, and we're not even taking orders anymore," he said.
Ray Daniels, a 33-year company veteran, blamed Ford for not updating the Taurus and keeping the name.
"If they'd kept the name, we'd still be here," he said.
Apparently, Mark Fields, Ford's president of the Americas, can't understand too how the company strayed so far from the Taurus. He wasn't with Ford when those decisions were made, but said he knows well that Ford's 1980s turnaround was led by appealing products, something he's trying to duplicate now.
Too late the hero? Let’s just hope that Ford comes up with a car that could surpass what the Taurus has accomplished – and that’s a tall order, especially at these times.

The Veracruz is expected to hit the U.S. market late this year.
The Veracruz and the Azera luxury sedan, which was introduced last year, offer the first models in a planned separate luxury brand for Hyundai, which may come as early as 2008.

Autoblog reports that GM Europe has just announced that the FlexFix system will be offered on the new Opel Antara crossover.
Essentially a drawer that can be pulled out from the car's rear bumper, the FlexFix system is equipped with two wheel-mount bike racks, an extra rear license plate, and supplemental brake lights. When not in use, you wouldn't even know the system was there if not for the drawer cutout.
General Motors currently offers the system in its 2007 Opel Corsa – sold only in Europe.

In the news: Nissan will reportedly move production of the Quest minivan and the Infiniti QX56 sport-utility vehicle to two factories in Japan from the company's plant in Canton, Miss. over 2008-2009.
According to Japan's Nihon Keizai business daily, Nissan expects to save money from the move because its domestic plants are better equipped to handle model changes for vehicles produced and sold in relatively small quantities. The unused manufacturing capacity at the Mississippi plant would be shifted to increased production of pickup trucks, leaving total plant output unchanged, the paper added.
Nissan sold about 40,000 Quests and 15,000 QX56s in North America in 2005, the paper noted.

BMW has announced that it will introduce the world's first hydrogen-powered luxury performance car, The Associated Press reported.
The German automaker will call the to be historic vehicle the Hydrogen 7, and will build a limited edition of the car in Europe which will be sold to the U.S. market, BMW said in a statement. The Hydrogen 7 will be equipped with an internal combustion engine capable of running on either hydrogen or gasoline and is based on BMW's 7 Series.
The numbers? The car's engine is a 260-horsepower, 12-cylinder engine and accelerates from zero to 62.1 mph (zero to 99.4 kph) in 9.5 seconds. The top speed is limited electronically to 143 mph (228.8 kph).
The much talked about hydrogen technology reduces emissions generated and minimizes emissions of carbon dioxide. When run in the hydrogen mode, the Hydrogen 7 essentially emits nothing but vapor, says BMW.
By 2007, more than two million General Motor vehicles in the U.S. and Canada may be equipped with the OnStar Turn-by-Turn Navigation system.
According to GM, the new service from OnStar will be standard for the first year on GM retail vehicles sold in 2007 including nearly all Buicks and Cadillacs.
The automaker also said that the system will be offered on other GM vehicles through a $100 optional OnStar package upgrade during the initial year of service.
After the first year, customers can renew their package for $299 a year, GM said.

Chrysler has released pricing for its two new vehicles - the 2007 Sebring sedan with a base price of $18,995 and Aspen SUV at $31,490 including shipping.

Mazda has come out to deny rumors first reported by Tokyo’s Nihon Keizai business daily and picked up by Reuters claiming that the automaker was planning to eliminate its incentives on its U.S. models. According to Mazda spokesperson Jeremy Barnes, the automaker’s intention is to minimize incentives, but it will continue to use incentives.
The report said Mazda initially "intends to stop offering incentives for the new CX-7." Barnes said there are no cash incentives on the CX-7, only a $303-a-month for a 24-month lease program.
General Motors may have been doing a good job of impressing buyers as what the American Customer Satisfaction Index (a University of Michigan analysis of customer attitudes) revealed, but it is still Toyota sitting at the top of the heap when it comes to how well a vehicle meets customer expectations.
AutoWeek reports that on a 100-point scale, GM's Buick brand placed second with a rating of 86, up 2.4 percent from last year. Toyota ranked 87, for the second consecutive year, ranking first. Honda tied with Buick. Chevrolet scored an 81, the industry average, which reflected a 3.8 percent improvement from its score in 2005.
Chrysler and Dodge both remained below average in the index, while the Jeep brand dropped 1.3 percent to tie for last with Ford and Kia.

Toyota’s luxury car division Lexus raised the bar for luxury hybrid vehicles when they unveiled the 2008 Lexus LS600hL in the 2006 New York Auto Show. And now it is heading for production.
Lexus will redesign the LS to form a new breed of gasoline-electric vehicle, the 2008 Lexus LS600hL. The “h” stands for hybrid and “L” for a long wheelbase. The model will be available in 2007. Like all other Lexus vehicles, the LS600hL has a spacious and of course, luxurious interior seats.
The highly anticipated Lexus LS600hL is equipped with high-output electric motor along with the 5.0-liter direct gas injection V8 engine that produces 430 horsepower. Lexus says this all-wheel-drive (AWD) hybrid will provide power and performance equivalent to the 6.0-liter V12 engine and with the fuel efficiency of a full hybrid V8 engine. This could be the fastest hybrid vehicle in the future.
Lexus have no plans yet to announce the base price of the 2008 LS600hL hybrid.
Uh-oh. It’s not a $123 million loss for Ford after all.

Autoblog reports that after General Motors restated its second-quarter losses, Ford Motor followed suit, revising its second-quarter loss way upward, from $123 million to a whopping $254 million.
In an SEC filing, the Dearborn automaker raised its 2006 pension curtailment expense estimate from $1 billion to $1.2 billion, and revised its Q2 loss accordingly.
And Ford’s troubles continue.
In what turns out to be a sort of weird turn of events, Top Gear names Fiat 500 as Sexiest Car in the World.
Autoblog reports that Top Gear’s survey to find the Sexiest Car in the World, revealed that the Fiat 500 is ugh well, the Sexiest Car in the World. You read it right. The Fiat 500 earned the provocative title ahead of such vehicles as the Aston Martin DBS, Maserati Quattroporte, Alfa Brera and Ferrari Enzo. Autoblog muses that the little Fiat 500 emits pheromones out its tailpipe.
Fiat couldn’t be happier as the title comes perfectly in time just before the automaker releases an updated version of the 500.

The new Cupra is powered by an impressive 2.0T FSI petrol engine capable of delivering more than 240 horsepower. It is more powerful that its predecessor which is the Leon Cupra R, plus it can also run to 62 mph in 6.4 seconds.
It is said to be the hottest production SEAT ever. Its sporty and edgy look is characterized by the aggressive front styling together with the integrated foglights and honeycomb grill inserts. Aside from that, the unique taillights are also complimented by a black rear bumper insert and an integrated roof spoiler. This one’s definitely a hot hatch.
Along with this highly anticipated vehicle, SEAT will also showcase the Leon FR, Altea FR, Toledo, sportier 2006 Ibiza and the Alhambra MPV, as well as two of its race in the above mentioned Motor Show.
Too bad though, the U.S. will just have to stare from afar as the new Leon Cupra will not be offered here in the States.
